Century Puts Squeeze on Charter Oak
Brian Cortez’s squeeze bunt drove in Danny Valencia in the top of the ninth inning to give Century a 2-1 victory over Covina Charter Oak in the first round of the Santa Ana Elks baseball tournament Saturday.
Alex Gutierrez hit a home run in the seventh to tie the score, 1-1, for Century (6-6).
In the ninth with one out and Valencia at third, Cortez bunted back to the pitcher, who threw high to the plate.
In other tournament games:
Los Amigos 3, La Puente Nogales 2--Jesus Rodarte had two hits and two RBIs, including the game winner in the bottom of the fifth, for Los Amigos.
Saddleback 8, Orange 7--Ronnie Valdivia had a home run and a double and drove in five for host Saddleback (2-10). Jesse Romeo was three for three with two RBIs for the Roadrunners. C.J. Joiner hit a grand slam for Orange (2-11).
Santa Ana 5, Villa Park 1--Ray Flores, Armando Chavez and Jose Corona each had two hits, with Corona getting two RBIs for visiting Santa Ana (2-10). Horacio Ramirez (1-3) was the winning pitcher for the Saints, giving up one run and five hits. Villa Park is 5-6.
In the Big West Invitational:
Brea Olinda 11, University 9--Mike Davern went three for four with three RBIs and struck out two in the seventh for visiting Brea Olinda (8-5), which scored four runs in the sixth to take an 11-8 lead.
Huntington Beach 12, Foothill 7--Senior shortstop Ryan Hubbard was four for five, including two homers, and had three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base for the Oilers (6-5).
Marina 8, Aliso Niguel 6 (9)--Visiting Marina (5-6) got RBI bunts from Trevor Bond and Jason Stone in the ninth inning to defeat Aliso Niguel (6-6).
In the Downey tournament:
Canyon 4, La Serna 1--Jason Corapci was two for three for host Canyon (9-4), which took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the fourth.
In the Pride Of The Coast tournament:
Corona del Mar 5, Orange Lutheran 4--Matt Larson hit a bases-loaded single in the seventh to drive in two runs, including the game-winner, for the Sea Kings.
Ty Harper hit his fifth home run for host Corona del Mar (8-3) and teammate Eric Wiethorn hit a two-run homer.
Costa Mesa 7, Mission Viejo 5--Costa Mesa (7-3-1) trailed, 5-1, going into the fifth but scored three runs and three more in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.
Ruben Mancilla hit his fourth home run of the season for the Mustangs.
Fountain Valley 5, Westlake 3--Will Hudson’s two-run triple scored the tying and winning runs in the fourth inning for host Fountain Valley (9-4). Justin Azze (2-1) went five innings, striking out five, and also went two for two with two runs scored.
San Clemente 13, Hisperia Saltana 7--Adam Ehrheart, Ben Straley and Adam Little each hit two-run home runs for San Clemente (8-5).
