Clarifying Points on UCI Research
* We would like to clarify some points in your March 21 editorial relevant to our research on pediatric pedestrian injuries.
We have not studied immigrants’ knowledge of traffic laws.
In addition, the majority of child pedestrian injuries in our study occurred mid-block on residential streets near the child’s home, which is very different from jaywalking on major streets.
Our research indicated that on residential streets, reducing traffic speeds would significantly reduce the risk for child pedestrian injuries.
Your editorial was an over-simplification of the issue of pedestrian safety.
