Birmingham Rolls Deuce in Las Vegas

Freshman Raul Campos pitched his second consecutive complete game, Billy McGrath continued his steady hitting and Birmingham High remained one of the hottest baseball teams in the region by sweeping a doubleheader Friday on the first day of the Las Vegas Bishop Gorman tournament.

Campos struck out eight, walked two and scattered four singles in a 9-2 victory over Woodside at El Dorado High in the morning and the Patriots (9-5) collected 15 hits in a 9-5 afternoon victory over Highland (Utah) at Valley High.

McGrath, a senior, finished with six hits in the two games.

Birmingham has won six games in row after struggling in its first eight games.

In other Bishop Gorman tournament games:

Sylmar 17, Hillcrest (Utah) 7--Larry Anguino and Jamie Mah each had two hits and combined for seven runs batted in in an 11-run third inning for the Spartans (9-1) in a game at Bonanza High that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Anguino, who had three hits and six RBIs, hit a based-loaded triple and a two-run double in the third. Mah, who had three hits and three RBIs, hit a run-scoring double and a run-scoring single in the inning.

Chaminade 13, Taft 0--Jeff Hynick (3-1) pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk for the Eagles (8-4) in a victory at El Dorado High that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Spencer Gordon had three hits, including a two-run home run and a two-run double, and Jordan Hoff contributed a two-run double.

Poly 7, Valley (Nevada) 3--Robert Rodriguez (1-0) pitched a six-hitter, and Manny Flores and George Felix each had two hits for the Parrots (9-5) in a victory at Valley High.

Pleasant Grove (Utah) 10, Highland 2--Jason Kubel drove in both runs for the Bulldogs (9-4) with a double and a ground out at Bishop Gorman High.

Pleasant Grove (Utah) 13, Kennedy 3--Juan Sepulveda and Enrique Mavarrepe each had two hits for the Goldne Cougars (5-8) in a loss at Bishop Gorman.

Las Vegas Bonanza 15, Chatsworth 3--Matt Cassel had three hits and an RBI for the Chancellors (9-2), who had a six-game winning streak snapped at Bonanza.

Crescenta Valley 9, Pasadena 0--Left-hander Jordan Olson (6-0) pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts and no walks for the Falcons (9-1, 6-0) in a Pacific League victory at Pasadena (5-6, 3-3).

Tim Balkey hit a home run in a seven-run fifth inning.

Hoover 8, Muir 0--Brandon Bell (2-3) pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and the Tornadoes (7-3, 4-2) hit five home runs in a Pacific League game at Hoover.

Royal 17, Garey 4--Scott Rice hit two home runs, finishing with three hits and six RBIs, and the Highlanders (10-2-1) won the third-place game in the Pomona tournament. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Notre Dame 11, Simi Valley 1--John Gitlin had two hits and two RBIs for the Knights (11-2) in a nonleague game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule at Notre Dame.
