Hot Springs Secret
Regarding the story on Mono Hot Springs, (“Sierra Secret,” Aug. 9): It was followed by a letter from David Peel who is worried because the secret was revealed to 1.4 million readers. I made the trip on the strength of the article. He needn’t worry. For the benefit of adventurous urbanites like myself, allow me to say that the last 16 miles of “road” are not for the uninitiated. In places, it’s barely vehicle-wide at precipices.
Mono Hot Springs does indeed offer pristine wilderness, a river and full amenities. However, as a 47-year resident of L.A., I found the beauty of Shaver Lake, just below Mono Hot Springs, to be the better-kept secret. All these years, I’ve been going to nearby National Parks which are now in sad decline.
