It Takes More Than a 49-6 Win to Please Kansas State’s Snyder

Neither rain nor a hostile Baylor homecoming crowd in Waco, Texas, could derail the unbeaten Kansas State express.

Now the No. 4 Wildcats head into their showdown next week with No. 14 Nebraska.

Michael Bishop threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score and David Allen tied an NCAA season record with his fourth punt-return touchdown onSaturday to carry Kansas State to a 49-6 victory over the Bears.

The Wildcats, 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big 12, won their 17th consecutive game and gave Coach Bill Snyder his 75th victory at Kansas State. No Wildcat team had ever won its first nine games although Kansas State did win 13 in a row from 1909 to 1910.

Still, Snyder was hardly overjoyed.

“I’m not pleased with the way we played after the first two touchdowns,” Snyder said. “We really struggled. We gave up some big plays and didn’t play [on defense] like we are capable of playing.”

Kansas State, a 30-point favorite, took advantage of two Baylor miscues to take a 21-0 halftime lead over the Bears (2-7, 1-5) on a rainy homecoming before 38,217 soaked fans.

No. 7 Texas A&M; 29, Oklahoma 0--The Sooners were held to a season-low 124 yards of offense and Branndon Stewart passed for two touchdowns and ran for one, leading the Aggies at College Station, Texas.

Texas A&M; (9-1, 5-0) won its ninth game in a row and beat the Sooners (3-6, 1-5) for the fourth consecutive time.

No. 14 Nebraska 42, Iowa State 7--The Cornhuskers may have been down after losing to Texas and struggling in a victory over Missouri, but they rolled over the Cyclones at Ames, Iowa.

Dan Alexander ran for 110 yards and three touchdowns in his first start, quarterback Eric Crouch did a nice job running the option and Joe Walker returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown as Nebraska (8-2, 4-2) beat Iowa State (2-7, 0-6) for the 20th time in 21 years.

No. 18 Missouri 38, Colorado 14--Devin West had a record-breaking game as the Tigers (7-2, 5-1) beat the Buffaloes (6-3, 3-3) at Columbia, Mo.

West, who ran for 146 yards and three touchdowns, broke the school single-season rushing record of 1,312 yards set by Joe Moore in 1969. He scored three touchdowns, giving him a school-record 17 for the season.

No. 20 Texas 37, Oklahoma State 34--For three quarters, the Cowboy defense swarmed Ricky Williams at Austin, Texas, but Williams gained 42 of his 90 yards in the game’s final drive, setting up Kris Stockton’s 29-yard game-winning field goal with three seconds left.

The Cowboys showed early their defensive concern was stopping Williams, so the Longhorns concentrated on throwing the ball. As a result, freshman quarterback Major Applewhite went 29 for 40 for 408 yards and three touchdowns--including a 48-yarder to Williams.

Kansas 23, North Texas 14--Andrew Davison returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown with 7:31 left to play as the Jayhawks (4-6) at Lawrence, Kan., in a sloppy, rain-soaked game that featured 168 yards in penalties. North Texas is 2-7.
