UCLA vs. OREGON STATE
* Time: 3:30 p.m.
* Site: Parker Stadium, Corvallis, Ore.
* Records: UCLA 7-0, 5-0; Oregon State 4-5, 1-5.
* TV: Fox Sports West.
* Radio: AM 1150.
* The offenses: Oregon State is averaging only 102.4 yards a game on the ground, but running back Ken Simonton is second in the conference at 92 a game. A freshman, he’s on pace to become the first Beaver to break 1,000 in 28 years. Teammate Tim Alexander is third in the Pac-10 in all-purpose yards, doing damage at flanker and on punt and kickoff returns.
* The defenses: Oregon State’s Armon Hatcher had two interceptions last Saturday against Cal, giving him four for his senior season and 12 for his career. Three more in the next two games get him a tie with Dan Espalin for the top spot in school history. End Inoke Breckterfield has been called the best defensive player in the conference by Arizona Coach Dick Tomey, and UCLA Coach Bob Toledo compares him to Bruin linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, undersized but still a major factor because of speed and athleticism.
* Key to the game: UCLA against the elements as much as UCLA against Oregon State. The forecast says this will be the Bruins’ first game in the rain. It will definitely be their first on an artificial surface, increasing the pounding on tailbacks already nursing leg injuries, starter Jermaine Lewis and DeShaun Foster.
* Fast fact: A victory will put the Bruins at 8-0 for the first time since 1954.
* Line: UCLA by 17.
