Bombing Suspect May Have Used Trail
The man suspected of bombing an Alabama abortion clinic may have eluded a massive manhunt by escaping along the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail, federal authorities said. Eric Robert Rudolph, 31, had told acquaintances before the bombing that he might use the trail as an escape route if he needed to, FBI Inspector Terry Turchie said. The FBI did not say if Rudolph told anyone why he may need to escape. Rudolph, an Army veteran and outdoorsman, was last seen Jan. 30 in North Carolina, a day after the New Woman All Women Health Care Clinic in Birmingham, Ala., was bombed. The explosion killed an off-duty policeman and seriously wounded a clinic nurse.
