Kevorkian Assists in His 100th Suicide
Dr. Jack Kevorkian helped a 66-year-old man with lung cancer kill himself, the 100th suicide he has assisted in. Waldo Herman died at his Detroit home in the presence of the retired pathologist, Kevorkian’s attorney, Geoffrey Fieger, said. Herman died one day after the Michigan House of Representatives backed a bill that targets Kevorkian by banning assisted suicide. The bill makes assisted suicide a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines, or both. It now goes to the Senate, where minor changes are expected to be adopted before it goes to Gov. John Engler, who is expected to sign it. When reached at his home, Kevorkian confirmed he was present at the death.
