Grant Runs Into an Ambush and Loses at Monroe
Monroe High rode the momentum of a second-quarter run and upset Valley Pac-8 Conference leader Grant, 87-74, in a boys’ basketball game at Monroe on Wednesday.
The Vikings (5-12, 2-3 in conference play) trailed, 14-10, after the first quarter, but outscored the Lancers (13-7, 4-1), 25-15, in the second quarter and did not look back.
Victor Hall scored 27 points, Eric Bush had 20 and Damian Ritter added 18 points and seven assists for the Vikings. Bush scored 12 of his points in the second quarter.
Gilbert Arenas scored 25 points and Krishna Evans had 21 for the Lancers, who defeated Monroe, 76-61, in last month’s Birmingham tournament.
In other boys’ basketball games:
San Fernando 61, El Camino Real 50--Tyrone Pernell had 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Tigers in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.
Devin Montgomery did not play for the Tigers (18-2, 5-0) for disciplinary reasons.
Newbury Park 81, Agoura 66--Robert Congelliere scored 23 points and Daniel Bobik added 21 for the Panthers (18-4, 9-0) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
Garrett Lepisto scored 21 for Agoura (10-9, 4-5) and Marcus Helfman added 17 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Simi Valley 91, Channel Islands 75--Rafael Berumen had 25 points and 15 rebounds for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.
Brett Michel scored 19 points for Simi Valley (19-3, 8-1).
O.J. Thomas had 19 points for Channel Islands (15-4, 6-3).
Thousand Oaks 59, Westlake 57--Bas Van Rhee had 16 points and 20 rebounds for the Lancers (7-13, 4-5) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.
Bell-Jeff 68, Cathedral 63--Ruben Douglas scored 24 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter for the Guards (13-11, 5-3) in a Santa Fe League game at Bell-Jeff.
Camarillo 63, Royal 61--Jeff Stuteville had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Scorpions (7-12, 1-8) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.
Sylmar 69, Poly 66--George Wrighster made two free throws with 12 seconds left for the Spartans in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.
Brandon Jacobs scored 17 and Wrighster added 15 for Sylmar (10-9, 3-2).
John Gilliard scored 20 points for Poly (8-11, 2-3).
Birmingham 71, Granada Hills 56--Emmanuel Evans had 32 points and 11 rebounds for the Braves (13-6, 3-2), who scored 52 second-half points in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham.
Cleveland 66, Chatsworth 53--Kent Dennis had 22 points and Brian Smith added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Cavaliers (13-7, 3-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
Josh Rodgers scored 18 for Chatsworth (11-8, 2-3).
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Birmingham 44, San Fernando 39--Juana Gatson had 13 points and six steals for the Braves (10-5, 3-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.
El Camino Real 56, Kennedy 44--Cara Blumfield had 16 points for the Conquistadores in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.
Chrissy McClain added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Conquistadores (15-0, 5-0).
Royal 71, Camarillo 35--Teresa Russell had 14 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, five blocked shots and six steals for the Highlanders in a Marmonte League home game.
Jessica Sanders scored 15 points for Royal (19-2, 8-1).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal Lutheran 67, Claremont-Mudd 65--Mike Salser’s two free throws broke a tie with 1:19 left and Johnny Allen added a three-point play with 16 seconds left for the Kingsmen (8-8, 4-1) in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Claremont-Mudd.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Canyons 107, Santa Monica 83--Maxine Unverferth had 30 points and 15 rebounds, and Laura Tweedy had 21 points and 14 rebounds in a Western State Conference South Division game at Canyons.
Ventura 76, Cuesta 40--The Pirates had 31 steals in a WSC North Division game at Cuesta.
Amirah Leonard had 13 points, six assists and six steals for Ventura (25-1, 3-0).
BOYS’ SOCCER
El Camino Real 3, Kennedy 0--Jose Rivera-Otero, Sean Miller and Ian Kogan scored for the Conquistadores (11-4-1, 8-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.
Agoura 1, Westlake 0--Scott Simms scored with 11 minutes to play, lifting the Chargers (9-9-1, 5-5) past the Warriors (9-7-1, 4-5-1) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
Thousand Oaks 2, Newbury Park 1--Danny Ermolovich and Chris Jack scored first-half goals for the Marmonte League-leading Lancers (13-3-3, 9-1-1) at Thousand Oaks.
Pawel Gago scored for Newbury Park (7-9-5, 2-6-3).
Simi Valley 2, Royal 1--Chris Wells headed in a pass from Mustafah Sawari six minutes into overtime to give the Pioneers (11-7-1, 4-5-1) a Marmonte League upset at Royal (15-6-3, 5-3-2).
Channel Islands 1, Camarillo 0--Antonio Ayala scored three minutes into the second half and the Raiders (2-7-2, 2-5-2) upset the Scorpions (8-6-3, 5-4-1) in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Westlake 1, Agoura 0--Jenna Ainsworth scored in the first minute after Patti Hostin’s corner kick and the Warriors (14-3-1, 8-1-1) held off the Chargers (14-6-2, 6-4-1) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Thousand Oaks 9, Westlake 1--Kelly Foster and Kelly Gunderson each had three goals for the Lancers (15-2, 9-0) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.
