It’s Born Again and Chaminade Wins Title

Senior stopper Lindsey Born scored on a head shot off a direct free kick from 25 yards on the left side by Amy Watts in the 76th minute and Chaminade beat Paraclete, 1-0, to claim its third consecutive El Segundo tournament championship Saturday at El Segundo High.

It was the fourth goal of the season for Born, a set-play specialist who has recorded all of them on corner kicks and free kicks.

Sara Liebowitz made four saves and posted her fourth shutout for Chaminade (6-1), which had a 10-6 shot advantage over Paraclete (6-1-1).

A goal by Mindy Wyatt of Chaminade was nullified by officials because of a foul just four minutes before Born’s goal.

Liz Buhn of Chaminade, a junior sweeper, was named most valuable player.

The Eagles advanced to the final by beating Chadwick, 6-0, earlier in the day.

Lancaster 0, Calabasas 0--Kristy Hamilton, Maria Goodwin, Melissa Cumer, Michelle Hamilton and Laci Fults converted penalty kicks and Lancaster won a 5-4 shootout at the end of regulation in a consolation game of the South Torrance tournament.

Crescenta Valley 1, La Canada 0--Jessica Baldridge scored in the 55th minute in a nonleague game at La Canada.

Lauren Arase, goalkeeper on the U.S. under-19 team, made 18 saves for La Canada (1-1-2). Crescenta Valley is 3-1-1.

BOYS

Santa Paula 3, Cabrillo 2--Rolando Lira scored two goals and Carlos Aguilar converted the decisive goal in the 60th minute for the Cardinals (6-1-1) in the Carpinteria tournament final.

Lira scored an unassisted goal from 30 yards in the fifth minute and in the 30th minute on an assist from his brother, Severiano.

Aguilar scored unassisted on a rebound from 15 yards.

Servite 2, Reseda 1--Neil Pavlov scored the winner from 30 yards in sudden-death overtime in a semifinal game at the Burroughs tournament.

El Camino Real 3, Sylmar 1--Jimmy Choto scored on two headers and teammate Jose Rivera-Otero had two assists in pool play of the Narbonne tournament.

Choto converted on a crossing pass from Rivera-Otero in the 50th minute and after a corner kick by Ian Kogan in the 55th minute.

Yan Falkenstein had the other goal for El Camino Real (5-1).

Harvard-Westlake 5, Newbury Park 1--Matt Thayer scored four goals for the Wolverines (5-2) in the consolation championship of the Burroughs tournament.

St. Francis 4, Royal 3--Rey Hernandez scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute from 30 yards and the Knights won a Burroughs tournament consolation game.

Anthony Zorich scored two goals for St. Francis (1-1-2).
