Community College Athletes of the Week
Adria Sortino
Orange Coast, Sophomore
Basketball
Sortino was an off-guard at Marina High but has had no trouble moving to point guard for the Pirates. One of the reasons is her desire, according to Coach Mike Thornton. “She plays as hard as anybody on defense as I’ve ever coached,” he said. Sortino scored 46 points, had 22 assists and only six turnovers as OCC won four games last week. She was selected the most valuable player of the Cuesta tournament.
Basketball
Tracy Downs
* Golden West, freshman. She scored 22 points and had 15 rebounds in an 84-56 victory over Mt. San Jacinto.
Bryan Webster
Santa Ana, Freshman
Wrestling
There was hardly any drama as Webster, from Corona Centennial, advanced to the state title match in the 174-pound class Saturday. But he needed a two-point escape in the closing seconds of overtime to win the title over Fresno’s Larry Silva. Webster was the top-seeded wrestler from Southern California and Silva was No. 1 from Northern California. Webster won his first three matches, 19-2, 19-10, and 8-4.
Basketball
Terrail Zoller
* Orange Coast, freshman. Made the all-tournament team as the Pirates finished second in the OCC Kiwanis tournament.
