Pepperdine Stays on Roll, Upsets Pacific

Angling for entry in the Top 25 poll, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team defeated its second ranked opponent in as many nights on Saturday.

This time, the Waves knocked off No. 8 University of the Pacific, 6-15, 18-16, 5-15, 16-14, 15-7, in a nonconference match at Hawaii.

Nicole Sanderson had 23 kills and Jamie Hill added 22 for the Waves (9-0), who defeated No. 13 Hawaii in five games on Friday.

Kristin Lee, a transfer from Moorpark College, had 17 kills for Pepperdine.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Pepperdine 11, Santa Clara 2; Pepperdine 11, UC San Diego 4; Pepperdine 14, Claremont 3--Jeremy Pope scored nine goals and the Waves won three matches at the Pepperdine tournament.

Jack Kocur added seven goals for the fourth-ranked Waves (3-0).

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 12, Rio Hondo 0; Grossmont 12, Valley 3; Sierra 14, Valley 5--Stephanie Hammer and Paulette Bonetti each scored five goals for the Monarchs (2-2) in a Cypress tournament pool-play victory over Rio Hondo, the third-ranked team in the state.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

University of San Diego Invitational--Chris Shaw placed sixth for Pepperdine, touring the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 36 seconds, to lead the Waves to a fifth-place finish.

San Diego, led by Bobby Gomez’s first-place 15:45, won the meet.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 2, National American (S.D.) 1--Lucas Principe scored two second-half goals in two minutes to give the Mustangs (1-4) a pool-play victory at the Westminster (Utah) tournament.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Portland State 3, Cal State Northridge 2--Mary Cascio scored 10 minutes into sudden-death overtime in a Big Sky Conference opener Friday night. Cascio also had two assists for the Vikings.
