Methyl Bromide Raises Concerns
* I am a Ventura County resident concerned about the economic and environmental issue of methyl bromide. I have read the article “Natural and Strictly Regulated” by California Strawberry Commission President Dave Riggs (July 20) with some concern. His point of view on the methyl bromide spraying to help benefit the economic issues of crops and especially strawberry farmers is understandable. But, more importantly, what about the environmental safety issues?
My main concern is, as environmental attorney Lori Schiraga states in her opposing article, “Until all studies are completed . . . the residents of California are essentially being used as guinea pigs.”
I would appreciate literature and studies that have been done to prove that methyl bromide is not an extremely toxic pesticide and that it can be used in any area where there is human exposure.
