Carlesimo’s Trail at Point of No Return
PORTLAND, Ore. — The long-rumored firing of Portland Coach P.J. Carlesimo became a reality Thursday, with Trail Blazer President Bob Whitsitt saying the team needs a playing style that meshes with its quick, young talent.
Carlesimo, who will be paid slightly more than $3 million for the remaining two years of his five-year contract, led the Blazers to a 49-33 record this season and a first-round playoff matchup with the Lakers. His three-year NBA mark is 137-109, and he was 3-9 in the postseason.
Whitsitt said he wants a coach with NBA experience and has a short list of candidates but wouldn’t name them.
