Flood Damage to Yosemite Valley Estimated at $178 Million

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK — Yosemite Valley sustained an estimated $178 million in damage when the rampaging Merced River flooded New Year’s Day, park Supt. B.J. Griffin reported Friday.
Congress is almost certain to approve a supplemental appropriations bill to pay for repairs to one of the nation’s most prestigious parks, she added. A bill will be introduced next week.
Griffin also said day visitors “in limited numbers†may be allowed into Yosemite Valley in March. The valley is currently closed to all visitors because of the damage.
