Milosevic Urges an End to Protests
Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic urged an end to two months of anti-government protests but gave no sign he would abide by an election panel ruling that the opposition had won Belgrade, the capital. The Supreme Defense Council, which includes Milosevic and top military and political officials, said in a statement that it expects Serbia--not outsiders--to “politically solve the problems.” Meanwhile, the former mayor of Belgrade, who was ousted by Milosevic, joined in criticism of the Milosevic camp. Nebojsa Covic said his expulsion was “proof that in the Socialist Party . . . differences in thinking, tolerance and intraparty democracy are still unacceptable.”
