Commins, Turnbull Spark San Clemente to Victory
Taryn Commins scored 16 points and Colleen Turnbull had 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead eighth-ranked San Clemente past No.10 Esperanza, 50-43, in a nonleague girls’ basketball game Tuesday at Esperanza.
Esperanza (11-4) had a slim lead after the opening quarter, but was outscored, 18-9, in the second quarter to fall behind by eight. San Clemente improves to 11-4.
In Golden West League girls’ basketball:
Ocean View 64, Rosary 34--Jennifer Tuiolosega scored 33 points, making 17 of 19 free throws, for visiting Ocean View (12-3), ranked sixth in the county. Tuiolosega’s 17 free throws set a school record.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Edison 52, Estancia 34--Edison took a 30-19 halftime lead and cruised to the easy victory. Shauna Steward led the ninth-ranked Chargers (11-3) with 16 points and seven steals. Teammate Jenny Shutt added 11 points. Estancia was led by Jill Black with a game-high 23 points.
Huntington Beach 64, Irvine 47--Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham had 25 points, eight assists and seven steals for Huntington Beach (10-3).
Newport Harbor 54, Costa Mesa 37--Breanna Badorek scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Newport Harbor (8-7). Desiree Talley and M.E. Clayton each added 13 for the Sailors. Costa Mesa is 9-7.
Saddleback 45, Santa Ana 44 (OT)--Saddleback’s Myra Toscano had 16 steals to tie Nikki Clark’s county record. Clark played for Brea Olinda during the 1990-91 season.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Capistrano Valley 1, Brea Olinda 0--Justin Landgraff scored the winner in the 79th minute for fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley (10-2-2). Mark Greco had three saves in the Cougars’ shutout.
Laguna Hills 1, San Clemente 1--San Clemente (9-0-5), ranked sixth in the county, took the lead briefly when Darrell Boyer scored in 78th minute. Ryan Johnson, however, scored the tying goal in the 80th minute for host Laguna Hills (5-7-3).
Mater Dei 2, El Toro 0--Senior Tony Micheletti scored both first-half goals to give him 14 for the season. Brett Corbin and Walter Camargo assisted Micheletti on the goals. Jeff McKeever had five saves in the shutout for Mater Dei (12-0-1).
In Golden West League girls’ soccer:
Rosary 1, Ocean View 0--Laura Fulton was assisted by her twin sister Lesley for Rosary’s winning goal. Theresa McNatt had two saves for the shutout.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Irvine 1, University 1--Missy Painter scored the tying goal off Rupa Chandra’s assist with eight minutes remaining for Irvine (7-5-2), ranked 10th in Orange County.
Los Alamitos 2, Long Beach Poly 1--Cyndi Tredway scored two second-half goals to help the Griffins (10-3-2), ranked seventh in the county, rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Poly is 7-2-1.
Mission Viejo 2, Laguna Hills 0--Whitney Hughes and Whitney Fitzpatrick scored second-half goals to lead third-ranked Mission Viejo (11-2-2) past ninth-ranked Laguna Hills (8-6).
Santa Margarita 4, Aliso Niguel 0--Kristen Rowe scored two goals and assisted on both of Maresa Zanetti’s goals for host Santa Margarita (6-0-1), the top-ranked team in Orange County.
In Sunset League girls’ water polo:
Esperanza 6, Fountain Valley 5--Andrea Griffith scored the game-winning goal with 5:19 left to play for Esperanza (5-4, 1-0). After trailing, 4-0, in the second quarter, Caroline Guidi led Esperanza’s comeback, scoring four goals to tie the score, 5-5, at the end of the third quarter.
