A federal jury in Texas has ordered Chevron U.S.A. to pay nearly $61 million to a contractor that claimed its workers were sickened by unsafe conditions at the oil company’s El Paso refinery. Chevron said it will appeal. . . . A federal judge has ordered Phelps Dodge Corp. to pay the U.S. Postal Service $21 million and take back 37 acres of contaminated land it sold the agency in 1986. Phelps Dodge has not decided whether to appeal.
