Michigan State Eliminates Long Beach State
Long Beach State, seeded seventh for the NCAA women’s volleyball championships, lost to Michigan State, 15-4, 13-15, 15-6, 15-8, in the Central Regional semifinals Thursday in Gainesville, Fla.
Veronica Morales had 19 kills and Jenny Whitehead had 11 blocks for Michigan State (26-6). The 49ers, seeded second in the region, finished 33-3.
“We just didn’t play very well,” Long Beach State Coach Brian Gimmillaro said. “You work so hard, you practice so hard that sometimes you don’t play well. And that’s what happened to us tonight.”
Jenn Snyder had 19 kills and setter Misty May had 46 assists and 20 digs to lead the 49ers, who struggled offensively.
Long Beach had a hitting percentage of .154 Thursday after hitting .307 as a team during the regular season. The 49ers committed 31 hitting errors and 13 service errors.
