Inside Information Wins Keeneland Race
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Heavily favored Inside Information caught Jade Flush with a quarter mile left Sunday and went on to win by a head in the $319,800 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland.
Inside Information, a 4-year-old filly, covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:50 to win for the 13th time in 16 career starts.
Jockey Mike Smith, who rode Inside Information, said his horse was “overanxious” in the starting gate and had to overcome a bad start.
“It wasn’t her best race by no means, but it was a good, hard race for her,” he said. “If she gets away good, she’s probably going to be loping on the lead. She’s a free-running kind of horse, and when something like that happens, it kinda throws her game plan off, especially when it happens that bad.”
Inside Information paid $3. There was no place and show betting.
Mariah’s Storm, who upset Serena’s Song in her last start and won the Turfway Budweiser Breeders’ Cup, was four lengths back in third place.
Delaware Handicap winner Night Fax completed the field, which was reduced to four starters when Burning Desire was scratched.
Inside Information, owned by Ogden Mills Phipps, increased her career earnings to $1,121,805 with the winner’s purse of $198,276. Phipps and trainer Shug McGaughey combined to win the Spinster for the second consecutive year. They captured last year’s running with Dispute.
Trainer D. Wayne Lukas and jockey Pat Day combined to win two stakes races for 2-year-olds on Sunday. They won the $224,600 Alcibiades for fillies with Cara Rafaela and the $224,600 Breeders’ Futurity for colts and geldings with Honour and Glory.
Cara Rafaela, the 7-10 favorite, overtook Gold Sunrise on the turn and then held off Birr by 1 3/4 lengths to win the 1 1/16-mile Alcibiades in 1:44 2-5. Cara Rafaela, owned by Gonzalo Torrealba’s TNT Stud, increased her career earnings to $203,802 with the $139,252 winner’s purse. She paid $3.40, $3 and $2.40.
In the Breeders’ Futurity, Honour and Glory briefly relinquished his lead to Blushing Jim at the top of the stretch and then drew away to a 2 1/2-length victory. City by Night rallied from fourth place to finish second, 2 1/2 lengths in front of Blushing Jim.
Honour and Glory covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43 1/5 to pay $3.80, $3.20 and $2.60 and earn $139,252 for owner Michael Tabor.
