COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge Women Finish Second in Cross-Country

Jamie Whitmore, Cal State Northridge’s No. 2 or No. 3 runner all season, led the Matadors to a second-place finish in the inaugural American West Conference cross-country championships at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Saturday.

Whitmore, a freshman from Sacramento Valley High, timed 19 minutes 2 seconds over the 5,000-meter course to help Northridge to a 40-point total.

Host San Luis Obispo, led by the 1-2-3 finish of Kerrie Flathers (18:17), Lori Fancon (18:35) and Angela Orefice (18:38), was first with 21 points. Southern Utah was third with 59.

Jennifer Andrews (seventh in 19:11), Cheri-Lee Segal (eighth in 19:28) and Lori Miller (ninth in 19:41) added top-10 finishes for Northridge.

Brian Godsey finished ninth in the men’s race to lead the Matadors to a fourth-place finish.

Godsey timed 27:33 over the five-mile course as Northridge totaled 90 points.

San Luis Obispo, led by individual winner Coley Candaele (25:43), was first with 27 points, followed by Southern Utah with 53 and Cal State Sacramento with 61.

Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships--Jed Colvin and Jill Fuess were Cal Lutheran’s top finishers in the meet at Prado Park in Chino.

Colvin placed 27th with a time of 28:04 over the five-mile men’s course and Fuess ran 21:17 to finish 31st in the women’s 5,000-meter race. Cal Lutheran placed eighth in both the men’s and women’s team standings.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Lara Heifner scored in the second overtime as Cal Lutheran defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 2-1, in the Regals’ regular-season finale.

Despite winning their fourth consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, the Regals are unlikely to land a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The playoff pairings will be announced tonight, but Cal Lutheran (14-5, 11-1 in conference play) probably will be excluded because its record isn’t quite good enough, according to Sports Information Director John Czimbal.
