Cook-to-Stokes Conversion Helps End Bruin Streak
Skip Hicks scored on a seven-yard run with 3:05 remaining and Wayne Cook then threw a two-point conversion pass to J.J. Stokes, lifting UCLA to a 31-30 victory over Stanford on Saturday at the Rose Bowl.
Steve Stenstrom, who passed for a career-high 408 yards, guided the Cardinal into position for a game-winning field goal, but Eric Abrams was wide left on a 32-yard try with 16 seconds left.
The Bruins (3-6, 1-5 in Pac-10) snapped a six-game losing streak, their longest since 1943 when they lost seven in a row.
UCLA moved 71 yards on 12 plays for the winning touchdown, and the 6-foot-5 1/2 Stokes then caught the conversion pass in the right corner of the end zone over Leroy Pruitt, a 5-9 cornerback.
Stanford (2-5-1, 1-4) moved from its 35-yard line to the Bruins 15 before the left-footed Abrams, who had kicked three field goals earlier in the game, missed by inches.
The teams combined for 1,008 yards of total offense.
