In Brief
* 1/2 Various artists, “The Glory of Gershwin,” Mercury. If you always wanted to hear Jon Bon Jovi jam on George Gershwin, then: a) this is the album for you; and b) you are one sick puppy. A few guests--Elvis Costello, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Robert Palmer--do some justice to the great composer on this 17-track tribute, which is also a collaboration with 80-year-old harmonica player Larry Adler. But producer George Martin has little imagination about how to merge his guests’ gifts with Gershwin’s. New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
