Crew Abandons Ship in Fish Processor Fire
SITKA, Alaska — The crew of a 185-foot fish processor abandoned ship in rough weather early Thursday after a fire in the vessel’s engine room began burning out of control.
The Bristol Enterprise, which has its home port in Seattle, was en route to Dutch Harbor with 41 people aboard when the fire was reported, the Coast Guard said.
Another processor, the 180-foot Unimak Enterprise, was nearby and picked up the stricken vessel’s crew with some of its small boats. The Coast Guard said several people remained in an attempt to fight the fire and two helicopters were sent to assist.
