Kennedy Wastes No Time Pounding Pavement for Job

Former Taft High catcher Kevin Kennedy, fired Wednesday as manager of the Texas Rangers, interviewed Thursday for the manager’s job of the Boston Red Sox.

“Kevin has excellent baseball credentials and he received extraordinary training,” Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette said.

The Red Sox, who fired manager Butch Hobson on Sept. 20, said they will continue to interview managerial candidates, although no other names were mentioned.

Kennedy, 40, was dismissed after finishing the abbreviated season with a 52-62 record, first in the AL West.

He was 138-138 in two seasons with Texas.

Before that, he held various coaching jobs in the Los Angeles Dodger and Montreal Expo organizations.

Kennedy, who played three seasons at San Diego State and eight years in the minor leagues, was the fourth manager to be fired since the players went on strike Aug. 12.

The Rangers had lost six in a row before the strike, and their lead over Oakland had been cut to one game.
