LOS ANGELES : Judge Rejects Basinger’s Settlement With Filmmaker
A federal bankruptcy judge Thursday refused to approve a settlement between actress Kim Basinger and her creditors, calling a proposed payout to Main Line Pictures “too rich.”
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Geraldine Mund cited last month’s 2nd District Court of Appeal ruling that overturned an $8.1-million Los Angeles County Superior Court judgment against Basinger for reneging on a promise to appear in Main Line’s box office bust, “Boxing Helena.”
The proposed settlement set the film company’s claim at $3.8 million, which Mund found too high. The agreement would have given Main Line another $2.2 million if any so-called hidden assets were found.
“It’s too rich, at this point,” Mund said.
She said there was “no assurance that another jury (in a Superior Court retrial) would come in in favor of Main Line.”
Mund ordered attorneys for the company and trustee Ronald L. Durkin and Basinger to work out another settlement.
The Georgia-born actress’s other creditors have made claims totaling $1.7 million, said John Reitman, the trustee’s attorney.
