LA MIRADA : Hospital to Reopen Under New Owner

A new Dallas-based corporation has bought the Medical Center of La Mirada, which had been closed more than two years, and plans to reopen the facility by Feb. 1 to provide limited care.

The center will treat patients who require hospital stays of at least 25 days, and additional services such as outpatient surgery and emergency care may be offered in the future, said Ty L. Richardson, president of Specialty Hospitals of America Inc., the new owner.

“It is important that the community has a place to go when there is an emergency,” he said. Richardson acknowledged, however, that emergency care would be established only if it is found to be financially feasible.

The 145-bed hospital at 14900 E. Imperial Highway closed in May, 1992, when its owner, Medical Properties Inc. of Encino, reported heavy financial losses. Los Angeles-based FCC Holdings Ltd. foreclosed on the property Sept. 30 and sold it to Specialty on Oct. 7.

The center, which will be renamed The Specialty Hospital of Southern California, is the Dallas company’s first acquisition.

Since the center’s closure, those in need of immediate hospitalization or serious emergency care have had to travel to hospitals in Whittier, Downey, Buena Park and other nearby cities.
