CITY SECTION FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Vides Rescues Van Nuys, 22-20
Defensive back Allen Vides of Van Nuys High recovered a fumble at his team’s 13-yard line with 52 seconds left as the Wolves held off North Hollywood, 22-20, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener Friday night at Van Nuys.
Van Nuys (3-1, 1-0 in conference play) played without Larry Reed, who had rushed for 441 yards and eight touchdowns in the first three games. John McPherson, filling in for Reed, gained 46 yards in 16 carries.
North Hollywood (0-4, 0-1) drove from its 20 on its final possession deep into Van Nuys territory before quarterback Jesus Acosta fumbled.
Acosta completed 20 of 23 passes for 280 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Van Nuys opened the scoring on quarterback Chris Byfield’s three-yard run, and increased its lead to 15-0 when Byfield tossed a 31-yard scoring pass to Gilbert Casillas. McPherson ran for the two-point conversion.
After North Hollywood closed to 15-12 in the third period, Byfield connected with Casillas on a 10-yard pass for a 22-12 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Acosta hit Bruce Gage on a 40-yard scoring play, and Donte Clay scored the two-point conversion.
