37 States Win Cancer Registry Grants
WASHINGTON — Federal health officials awarded $14 million in grants Friday to 37 state health departments to create or expand cancer registries.
The goal is to reduce deaths from cancer, Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala said.
“We know that the burden of cancer for Americans varies widely by geographic location and by ethnicity,” Shalala said.
Twenty-eight states will receive funds to expand their existing registries: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Nine states will start registries: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina and Vermont.
