VENTURA : Professors Receive Funding for Projects
Two Ventura College professors have won national science grants that will allow them to beef up the school’s math and science programs.
Math and science instructors Richard Quint and W. Steve Quon submitted proposals aimed at buying new laboratory equipment to the National Science Foundation. Quint was awarded $45,626, while Quon was awarded $23,159.
Quint’s award will allow the Ventura College math department to establish a computer laboratory to improve students’ understanding of pre-calculus and calculus.
Quon’s award has been used to create a modern optics laboratory course that features state-of-the-art optical technologies such as lasers.
The national award competition is highly competitive, according to the National Science Foundation. Only 25% of the proposals submitted to the foundation’s Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement Program during the last fiscal year received funding.
