Shortstop Alan Trammell’s throwing error in the 13th inning Monday night gave the Chicago White Sox a 10-9 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Chicago.

Frank Thomas hit a grand slam, Julio Franco had two home runs and Robin Ventura hit one as the White Sox overcame a 9-3 lead.

Cecil Fielder homered twice and Kirk Gibson once for the Tigers.

Joey Cora led off the Chicago 13th with a walk off Storm Davis (0-3). Tim Raines sacrificed and Thomas was intentionally walked.

Franco hit a hard grounder to Fielder at first base, who threw to second for the force. But Trammell’s return throw sailed over the head of Davis, covering first base, and Cora scored.

Kirk McCaskill (1-2) pitched five innings of one-hit relief for the victory. It was the White Sox’s 15th victory in 18 games and moved them past Cleveland for the Central lead.

Thomas’ grand slam on the first pitch from reliever Joe Boever tied the score, 9-9, in the seventh. Thomas’ third grand slam of his career was his 34th homer of the season.

Detroit built a 9-3 lead in the sixth behind Fielder’s and Gibson’s home runs. Franco and Ventura hit consecutive homers in the sixth off Mike Gardiner, making his first start after 32 relief appearances.

Fielder hit a three-run homer in the first off Scott Sanderson, who was removed from the game in the second after doubles by Junior Felix and Juan Samuel and an RBI single by Tony Phillips.

Toronto 7, Minnesota 4--Joe Carter reached 20 homers for the ninth consecutive season and drove in four runs at Toronto.

Carter hit his 20th homer in the first inning, a three-run shot, and added a run-scoring single in the sixth. He has nine RBIs in his last three home games and 13 RBIs in 10 games against the Twins this year.

Al Leiter (4-5) gave up four hits over six innings for his first victory since May 21. He gave up two runs, one earned, and struck out six.

Darren Hall pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

The Blue Jays took a 4-0 lead in the first against Eddie Guardado (0-2). Roberto Alomar beat out an infield single, Paul Molitor walked and Carter sent a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left-center. Darnell Coles followed with a triple and scored on Ed Sprague’s single.

Domingo Cedeno, Alomar and Molitor hit consecutive singles in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-0.

Kirby Puckett led off the eighth with his 15th homer and league-leading 86th RBI, one more than Carter.

Kansas City 2, Milwaukee 0--Jose Lind homered for the first time in three years and emergency starter Chris Haney baffled the Brewers for seven innings at Milwaukee.

Lind’s homer bounced off the left-field foul pole for his first home run since June 16, 1991, when he was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It was only his ninth homer in 979 major league games spanning eight seasons, and his first in the American League.

The Brewers were unable to solve Haney, a left-hander called up from triple-A Omaha for a spot start because the Royals were playing their sixth game in five nights since the All-Star break.

Texas 6, Cleveland 5--Jose Canseco doubled home the go-ahead run with two out in the ninth at Cleveland.

The Rangers blew a 3-0 lead but came back to tie it, 5-5, in the seventh on a two-run single by Ivan Rodriguez off reliever Jose Mesa (7-5).

In the ninth, Mesa yielded a one-out double to Jeff Frye before Canseco hit his two-out double off the bullpen fence in dead center.

Seattle 7, Baltimore 5--Edgar Martinez’s double drove in Ken Griffey Jr. and Jay Buhner in the eighth inning at Seattle, breaking a 5-5 tie and ending the Mariners’ five-game losing streak.
