Vitesse Semiconductor Reports Slim Profit
Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. of Camarillo reported a profit of $128,000 for the fiscal third quarter ended June 30, compared to a net loss of $4.2 million for the same period a year ago.
The results represent the first profit in two years for the company, which manufactures gallium-arsenide semiconductors for computing and other uses. Vitesse, which has struggled with the decline of the supercomputer market, attributed the profit to growth in the company’s communications business--new customers include AT & T and Intel Corp.--and recent cost-reduction measures.
Revenue in the third quarter totaled $9.2 million, a 31% increase over the $7 million in the year-ago quarter.
Despite the return to profitability, the company reported a net loss of $4.3 million on revenue of $25.9 million for the first nine months of fiscal 1994. During the same period a year ago, the company reported a net loss of $15.9 million on revenue of $18.4 million.
