Barry Alvarez became the first Wisconsin coach to win the Big Ten’s Dave McClain coach-of-the-year award since it was inaugurated 21 years ago. He earned first-place votes on 94% of the ballots cast by a panel of midwest reporters and broadcasters.

Alvarez said it was particularly rewarding because the award was named for a former Wisconsin coach, who died in 1985.

Jay Macias, a backup quarterback from Montebello, is the only Californian on the Badgers’ roster. The 6-foot, 190-pound junior played at Schurr High, where he was twice player of the year. This season, he has had limited playing time behind starter Darrell Bevell, completing four of seven passes for 63 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass against Purdue. In three years at Wisconsin, Macias has six touchdown passes.
