LOS ANGELES : Driver Faces Manslaughter Counts in Passenger’s Death
Vehicular manslaughter charges are being sought against the driver of a pickup in an accident that killed a 15-year-old girl riding in the truck’s bed, police said.
Jessica Jones of Torrance suffered severe head injuries and died on arrival at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne after the accident Wednesday night in El Segundo, Police Sgt. Roger Stephenson said.
Jones was among four people riding in the bed of the pickup, which was “fishtailing” as it exceeded the 40 m.p.h. speed limit, Stephenson said.
The truck overturned after the driver, Douglas Scott Nelson, 19, of Agoura Hills lost control, he said. Three other teen-age passengers also were ejected and suffered minor injuries, police said.
El Segundo police will ask the district attorney’s office to file vehicular manslaughter charges against Nelson, Stephenson said.
