National Semiconductor Profit Surges: National Semiconductor Corp. reported that its fourth-quarter earnings rose 40%. Officials of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based semiconductor company attributed the gain to a major restructuring and expansion of manufacturing plants in Texas and Scotland. Earnings for the quarter ended May 30 were $46.2 million, or 35 cents per share, on sales of $557.9 million. That compares to earnings of $27.5 million, or 22 cents per share, on sales of $491.5 million a year ago. For the fiscal year, the company earned $130.3 million, or 98 cents per share, on sales of $2.01 billion. A year earlier, the company lost $120.1 million, or $1.24 per share, on sales of $1.72 billion.
