GUARDIANS OF YELLOWSTONE: An Intimate Look at the Challenges of Protecting America’s Foremost Wilderness Park by Dan R. Sholly with Steven M. Newman (Quill: $12; 317 pp.). Chief ranger Dan Sholly describes the problems of attempting to maintain Yellowstone as a relatively unspoiled wilderness while accommodating 2.5 million visitors each year. The most interesting chapters focus on the controversial 1988 decision to allow forest fires to burn and regenerate large sections of the park. Sholly’s ingenuous style soon cloys, but lovers of Yellowstone will enjoy his anecdotes.
