After winning the tri-championship of the Arrowhead League last season, the Eagles move into the Olympic League. “We were blessed last year,” Walker said. “I’m not sure what to expect in the Olympic League, but we’ll go after everything. We’ll just have to see.” First-team all-league players Smith and Jones return with second-team selection Elliott to anchor the infield and offense. Shortstop Elliott hit .450 as the leadoff hitter, and first baseman Jones hit .485, leading the team in RBIs. The switch-hitting Smith hit .314 last season, and King, who started as a freshman at catcher, hit .280. “We have a strong infield, and I’m quietly optimistic about our hitting,” Walker said. “The pitching question needs to be answered. We need to see who emerges a leader on our staff.” Herr and left-hander Steven Shearer, who held Downey Calvary Chapel scoreless for four innings in a 7-1 victory Saturday, appear to be the early candidates. The Eagles swept the doubleheader from Downey Calvary Chapel, winning the first game, 21-5. “If the pitching comes around, we can be competitive in the new league,” Walker said.
