Access at CSUN

If your idea of heaven is to roam among a million books stacked floor to ceiling, you don’t have to drive downtown to the central library. Just visit Cal State Northridge.

CSUN’s Oviatt Library boasts far more volumes than any community branch. It is also a federal and state depository, offering free access to government materials.

Of course, students and faculty are the library’s top priorities, especially in view of recent budget cuts, which severely trimmed the school’s staff, services and materials. Over the past two years, the school’s library budget was chopped by 25%, 26 staff members were cut and periodical subscriptions were slashed by 25%. Now the library has only half the purchasing power it had in 1985.

Members of the community are welcome to browse through the Oviatt, but make your first stop at your local public library. If you don’t find what you need, ask for a Metronet referral card, which should be presented upon requesting assistance from the CSUN reference librarian.

In most cases, books may be checked out only by students and faculty. However, members of library support groups and others who fit into various “courtesy categories” may request a CSUN library card. For more information, call 885-2285.
