Abandoned Infant Released from Hospital
A baby who was left this week on the doorstep of a Long Beach day-care center was released from the hospital Thursday and placed in the care of a foster family, officials said.
Ron Yukelson, spokesman for the Memorial Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach, said the abandoned infant--estimated to be about three hours old when she was discovered Wednesday morning by a boy walking to school--was “in good health and doing well” when she was discharged Thursday afternoon.
But Long Beach police investigating the case said the day had yielded no new information on the identity of the baby’s parents. “As far as we know, it’s still a whodunit,” said Cpl. Anthony Lembi of the department’s juvenile division.
The 6-pound, 7-ounce Caucasian girl was found about 7:54 a.m. Wednesday on the steps of the Long Beach Day Nursery, wrapped in a purple fleece jacket with a neon green collar and stuffed into a blue gym bag, police said.
Witnesses told police they had seen the same bag sitting on the stairs of the nursery the day before, but a blue sweat shirt hanging out of it was gone when the baby was discovered by 13-year-old James Walker, who lives across the street from the nursery.
Anyone with information about the identity of the child or her parents may call Long Beach police detectives at (310) 590-7321.
