Ruling on Nixon Papers
The American people have always been willing to forgive those who have harmed us. We forgave Richard Nixon for his part in Watergate, even elevating him over the years to that of senior statesman and adviser to presidents. Now, once more he asks us to swallow another bitter pill.
Nixon has won a legal victory over the Justice Department (“Nixon Is Owed for His Tapes, Court Rules,” Nov. 18) in which he will be able to collect millions of dollars from us, the taxpayers, because his rights under the Fifth Amendment were violated when prior court rulings prevented him from keeping his presidential papers.
Legal, yes. Moral, no.
In view of our nation’s pressing needs, in the face of the most appalling deficit in our history, if Nixon takes even one cent of this ill-gotten lucre, he must be judged as the most cynical and shameless public servant the country has ever trusted.
