She Looks Like a Billion Dollars
Barbie is a $1-billion industry.
Mattel Inc. of El Segundo said America’s favorite doll, 33, is expected to account for more than $1 billion in sales this year.
That’s up from $840 million last year--more than half Mattel’s total of $1.62 billion--and $430 million in 1987.
Expected big sellers this Christmas include Totally Hair Barbie, a $12 doll with tresses tumbling to her toes.
For $35, you can get Happy Holidays Barbie, dressed in silver lame.
Mattel is also offering dolls based on “Aladdin,” Disney’s new animated movie, and Baby Rollerblade, a 15-inch doll on in-line roller skates.
Mattel said its Disney character toys are selling well, but Barbie is the queen of the company’s overall line.
