JAZZ NOTES : Denon to Reissue Savoy Bop Classics on CD
When be-bop came to prominence in the mid-’40s, Savoy Records was right there in the thick of things, recording such now-classics as Charlie Parker’s “KoKo” and “Parker’s Mood” and Fats Navarro’s “Nostalgia.”
Many of these seminal recordings--and others from the ‘50s and ‘60s, all available only intermittently in recent years--are now being reissued on CD by Denon Records USA. Two years ago, Denon purchased the Savoy catalogue from Joe Fields, who owns Muse Records.
Denon is planning on issuing 10 Savoy CDs a month for the next two to three years, said label spokesperson Melanne Sacco. The initial releases, in the stores now, include “The Genius of Charlie Parker,” “The Charlie Parker Story,” “Presenting Cannonball Adderley,” “Introducing Lee Morgan” and “Opus de Bop,” with Stan Getz and Navarro’s “Nostalgia. “
The recordings have all been completely remastered, Sacco said, and will be issued with original album cover art and liner notes. Suggested retail price is $7.99

Rim Shot: Kim Richmond, noted Southern California saxophonist, composer and bandleader, is now a host of “Trilogy,” which airs Wednesdays, 9-10 p.m., on KXLU-FM (89.9).
In the Bins: Bassist Charles Fambrough, best known for his scintillating work with piano whiz McCoy Tyner, is heard on “The Charmer” (CTI Records), a set of seven very accessible acoustic jazz originals that feature such notables as pianists Kenny Kirkland and Stephen Scott, saxmen Kenny Garrett and Grover Washington Jr. and trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Fambrough plays the songs in person Tuesday through next Sunday at Catalina Bar & Grill, with trumpeter Oscar Brashear, saxman Joe Ford, Kirkland and Jeff Watts.
Leo Gandleman, the Brazilian saxophonist with the effusive sound, is out with “Visions” (One Globe Music), a date that blends Brazilian, funk and rock genres. The hornman also can be heard tonight and Saturday at Le Cafe in Sherman Oaks.
Critic’s Choice: Ranelin, the trombonist whose presence has enhanced several bands led by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, is one of the artists holding forth at the Whitestone Cafe in West Hollywood. Ranelin, who plays succinct, swinging ideas with a burnished, gleaming tone, is heard on Thursdays.
