George Bush’s Legacy
“Bush’s Illusionary Legacy” (by Walter Russell Mead, Opinion, Nov. 15) was (as usual) critical of the Bush Administration. Mead implies that every world problem now existent is either due to President Bush’s doing or not doing something. It ignores a numbers of facts: (1) The Administration has been active in many areas but the problems stated would not respond to U.S. actions; (2) the Bush Administration had a number of successes (Arab-Israeli peace talks, Desert Storm, and the North American Free Trade Agreement), and (3) Congress rarely supported Bush Administration efforts lest it permit a Republican President to get some credit.
Every now and then I count the ratio of articles supporting a cause that is either Republican, conservative or for the Bush Administration to those that are against these groups or just very liberal. The Times consistently has a ratio of 4 or 5 to 1 in favor of liberal Democratic views.
