Mendez gained 284 yards and scored five touchdowns as Bell defeated Los Angeles Jordan 35-0 to finish undefeated in the Southeastern Conference. Mendez, who started in place of suspended tailback Bobby Sullivan, made the most of his opportunity. According to Bell Coach Ray Galarze, “Every time (Mendez) goes in, he runs well with the ball.”
Other top prep performers:
Jeff Ridgeway, tailback for Lynwood High, gained 134 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Knights posted a 20-6 upset of San Gabriel Valley League opponent Downey High.
Aaron Flowers, Artesia High’s star quarterback, threw for 255 yards and connected on two touchdown passes to lead the Pioneers to a 25-17 win over Suburban League rival La Mirada. The win gave Artesia a share of the league championship with La Mirada.
