NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Cal Poly Basketball Teams Begin Play
The Cal Poly Pomona men’s and women’s basketball teams will begin their seasons Friday by playing host to four-team tournaments.
The Pomona men, under Coach Kevin Patterson, will play Dominican College at 7:30 p.m., in a tournament that also includes Biola and California Christian.
The Pomona women, under Coach Darlene May, open against Southern Colorado at 5:30 p.m. in a tournament that also includes Biola and Cal State Hayward.
The Pomona men are led by senior front-court players John Overbeck and Russ May.
The Bronco women feature All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. center Mildred Conston and guard LeeAnna Hiestand, who missed most of last season because of a knee injury.
The Claremont-Mudd water polo team, which won its 11th straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, will play UC Riverside in the first round of the Western Water Polo Assn. tournament Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer.
Claremont, which has won 110 SCIAC games in a row, defeated Redlands 13-12 in overtime to win the conference title.
The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth in the NCAA playoffs.
The Cal State Los Angeles men’s soccer team will play host to Seattle Pacific in an NCAA Division II second-round playoff match Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Seattle Pacific (15-3) and Cal State L.A. (16-1-3) are ranked first and second in the Western Region.
Flavio Rodriguez, Adrian Cortez and Mehran Molkara each scored in Cal State L.A.’s 3-2 first-round victory over Grand Canyon as the Golden Eagles overcame a 2-1 first-half deficit.
The Azusa Pacific women’s cross-country team and two members of the men’s team will participate in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletic championships Saturday at Kenosha, Wis.
The Cougar women advanced to the championships by finishing second at the District III meet at Fresno on Oct. 31.
Junior Tony Bergman and sophomore Jeff Burns qualified for the men’s individual race.
The Azusa Pacific women’s soccer team ended its season with a 12-9 record after finishing third at the NAIA West Region tournament last weekend at Olympia, Wash.
Azusa Pacific, which won its third straight District III championship, lost its regional opener against Seattle, then defeated Pacific of Oregon for third place.
The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team, coming off a season-opening victory over ninth-ranked Hawaii Pacific, continues its schedule Saturday with a game at Cal State Stanislaus.
Earic Peters led Azusa Pacific with 35 points against Hawaii Pacific.
The University of La Verne and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps were eliminated in the West Regional of the NCAA Division III women’s volleyball tournament.
La Verne defeated Claremont in the first round, 9-15, 15-2, 15-9, 7-15, 15-7, but the Leopards lost to eventual regional champion UC San Diego, 15-13, 3-15, 15-8, 15-7.
La Verne finished with a 15-11 record. Claremont finished 19-12.
