San Marino : Utility Tax Approved
Faced with an $800,000 budget deficit in fiscal 1993-94, the City Council has unanimously approved a utility tax to help close the gap.
Under the ordinance approved last week, residents and businesses will be taxed a minimum 5% on their electricity, gas, water, phone and cable TV bills.
A decision on the exact percentage--which could be higher--will be made by resolution before the council’s meeting Monday.
At 5%, a homeowner paying $290 for utilities would be taxed $14.50 a month; a business paying $685 a month would have an extra $34.25 in taxes.
