Bowing Out: Herbert Blomstedt, 65, plans to step down as the San Francisco Symphony’s music director at the end of the 1994-95 season to spend time with his four daughters in Sweden and return to his musical roots, the tradition and style of music-making in Europe. Blomstedt, who became the 10th music director of the symphony on Sept. 1, 1985, will continue working with the orchestra after 1995 in the newly created post of conductor-laureate. A search for a replacement director is to start immediately.
