SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills Rallies to Upset Top-Seeded Edison in 5 Games
Rachel Hochgesang had 25 kills as Sunny Hills overcame a miserable start to upset top-seeded Edison, 5-15, 15-6, 11-15, 15-6, 15-11, in a Southern Section Division II girls’ volleyball quarterfinal match Tuesday at Edison.
Unseeded Sunny Hills rallied from a 9-4 deficit in the fifth game for the victory. The Lancers (18-1) face unseeded Fountain Valley in Thursday’s semifinals.
“They’re just trying to take some years off my life,” Sunny Hills Coach Ron Kasser said of his team’s comeback. “I don’t know if the entire Edison team showed up.”
Edison played part of the second and the entire third and fourth games without starting setter Natasha Zila, who went out with stomach cramps.
Zila returned in the fifth game, and Edison took a 9-4 lead. Sunny Hills came back to tie it at 11.
An ace, a hitting error by Edison’s Alicia Liniger, and a kill by Hochgesang gave Sunny Hills a 14-11 lead. The match ended on an Edison net violation.
Liniger led Edison (21-2) with 20 kills.
