NHL ROUNDUP : Red Wings Finally Get Into Gear, 5-4
Bryan Murray knows his Detroit Red Wings are a good team when they want to be. But he worries about how seldom that seems to occur lately.
Tuesday night, Detroit came home with a two-game winning streak, but started out flat against Norris Division rival Chicago, falling behind by 3-0 in the first period.
During the break between periods, Murray and captain Steve Yzerman criticized the team, and the Red Wings responded with a 5-4 victory, giving them the Norris Division lead over Chicago and Toronto.
“We didn’t show up for the first period, so I guess I’ll have to start yelling an hour before game time,” Murray said. “The problem with the first period was strictly effort, and that bothers me quite a bit.”
The Red Wings still trailed by 4-2 after two periods, but scored three goals in the last 20 minutes to win. Shawn Burr scored the winner at 13:20 from a difficult angle, bouncing his shot off goaltender Ed Belfour and into the net for his third goal of the season.
“I was just trying to throw it at the net,” Burr said. “I stabbed at it with the end of my stick, but I thought Belfour took his eye off of it.”
Pittsburgh 4, Buffalo 2--Rick Tocchet scored twice and NHL scoring leader Mario Lemieux had his 23rd goal as the Penguins extended their home unbeaten streak to 19 games.
Pittsburgh is 17-0-2 at the Civic Arena in regular-season games since losing 8-4 to Hartford on Feb. 27. Lemieux has at least one goal in 18 of Pittsburgh’s 20 games this season.
Quebec 3, Toronto 1--The Nordiques’ Ron Hextall made 32 saves and outplayed the Maple Leafs’ Grant Fuhr in Fuhr’s return to action at Hamilton, Canada.
Fuhr was in goal after sitting out 10 games because of arthroscopic knee surgery. Joe Sakic, Steve Duchesne and Mats Sundin scored for Quebec. Nikolai Borschevsky scored for the Maple Leafs, who lost for the first time in six games.
Winnipeg 6, Tampa Bay 5--Teemu Selanne’s goal with 6:26 remaining broke a tie and Russian rookie Evgeny Davydov scored three times to lead the Jets at Tampa, Fla.
Selanne put in the rebound of Alexei Zhamnov’s shot to end a 5-5 tie. It was his 15th goal, best among rookies. The victory was the second in 11 road games for the Jets.
Montreal 5, Ottawa 3--The Canadiens scored three goals during the second period to win at Ottawa. It was the second night in a row the league-leading Canadiens (14-4-2) used a second-period rally to win.
