Signal America Signs Off: Signal America, a direct-mail company that had been struggling to stay afloat through the recession, ceased operations last week after 26 years in business.

The company, which had about 70 employees and more than 100 clients, had already scaled back operations last year and began renting space from Mailing & Marketing Inc., a direct-mail operation based in Orange. Signal America had been located in Long Beach.

Bruce Galey, Mailing & Marketing vice president, said Tuesday that his company plans to hire about 40 Signal production workers and 10 to 15 office workers. He also said that his company will offer services to Signal America clients.

“We will make sure that all projects in process are completed and that Signal America clients’ plans will not be delayed in any way,” Galey said.

Mailing & Marketing, founded in 1964, also has sales offices in Los Angeles and Phoenix.
